Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Johnson County ALONZO HOLBROOK, a native of Johnson County, Ky., was born November 5, 1851. He is a son of James and Sarah (Lyon) Holbrook. James Holbrook, his father, was born in Russell County, Va., March 1, 1829. January 27, 1851, he married Sarah Lyon, who was born June 11, 1829, and died February 4, 1870. James Holbrook came to Kentucky with his father and settled in Lawrence County, Ky., in 1839, where he was a farmer. Later he removed to Johnson County, Ky., where he reared a family, but is now a resident, a farmer and merchant of Lawrence County, Ky. He was a son of Pleasant and Sarah (Jordan) Holbrook, the former of whom was born in Russell County, Va., March 9, 1802. Sarah (Jordan) Holbrook was born in Russell County, Va., in 1805. They married in the same county February 4, 1827. Pleasant Holbrook died May 5, 1885 and his wife Sarah died February 19, 1885. The maternal grand-parents of Alonzo Holbrook were Jesse and Frances (Holbrook) Lyon, natives of North Carolina. Jesse Lyon was born in Wilkes County, N.C., April 5, 1789; Frances (Holbrook) Lyon, his wife, was born in the same county April 5, 1786. They married in their native county April 5, 1811, came to Kentucky in 1821, and settled in Floyd, now Lawrence County. Jesse Lyon, who was a farmer and blacksmith, died April 5, 1879, at the age of ninety years. His widow died June 30, 1882. Alonzo Holbrook was reared on a farm and educated in the common and select schools of Johnson County, Ky. He remained with his father until he was about twenty years of age, and was a teacher in the common schools several years; in the year 1876 he engaged in the merchandising business at Flat Gap, Johnson County, which business be has successfully continued. He was appointed Postmaster at Flat Gap October 6, 1870, of which office he is the present incumbent. April 8, 1882, he was married to Sip Rule, a daughter of A.W. and Angelina (Spradlin) Rule. A.W. Rule, father of Sip (Rule) Holbrook, was born August 14, 1814; Angelina (Spradlin) Rule, his wife and Sip Holbrook's mother, was born June 21, 1826. A.W. Rule and Angelina (Spradlin) Rule were married March 25, 1846. Their children were Martha Jane Rule (later Davis), born March 3, 1847; Sarah Ellen Rule (later Davis), born March 14, 1849; died of consumption February 24, 1870; Benjamin R. Rule, born April 5, 1851, died of consumption August 6, 1875; Rosco L. Rule, born January 4, 1853, died of consumption May 5, 1886; Andrew J. Rule, born November 3, 1854, died of consumption February 11, 1885; Proctor M. Rule, born August 3, 1858, died of consumption October 12, 1887; Sip (Rule) Holbrook, wife of Alonzo Holbrook, born February 11, 1862. Alonzo Holbrook's brothers were born as follows: Loranza D. Holbrook, born May 18, 1854; Jesse Holbrook, born June 18, 1858, died November 27, 1862; Plea-ant P. Holbrook, born March 20, 1862. October 3, 1887, Alonzo Holbrook was appointed notary public for Johnson County. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, No. 381, at Paintsville, Ky., and in politics is a Democrat. He owns property and land, and resides in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Ky.
