Johnson County

DANIEL M. HAGER was born in Johnson County, Ky., July 9, 1840, and is a son
of Daniel and Violette (Porter) Hager, natives of Virginia.  Daniel Hager
settled in Floyd County, Ky., which county he represented in the Legislature
one term; he also served as county judge two terms.  John Hager, grandfather
of our subject, was a native of Germany, and came to America as a British
soldier during the Revolutionary war.  Daniel M. Hager received such
educational advantages as the common schools of his neighborhood afforded.
He passed his life on a farm until twenty-one years of age, when he kept
store for six months, after which he spent two years in Salyersville,
Magoffin County.  In 1863 he enlisted in the army under Col. John M. Brown,
and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major.  At the close of the war he
returned to Paintsville, Johnson County, and engaged in merchandising.  In
1866 he married Mary I. Borders, of Johnson County, who died in 1873,
leaving two children, George and Samuel P.  In 1877 Mr. Hager married
Mojeska T. Vaughn, of Johnson County, a daughter of Judge H.S. and Mary
(Turner) Vaughn.  She died in 1886, the mother of three children, Eugene,
Virgie S. and Robert B.  Mr. Hager is a member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, and in politics is a Republican.
