Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. WILLIAM L. STEELE, who is engaged in the agricultural implement, seed and milling business at Nicholasville, was born August 8, 1843, in Jessamine County, and is a son of W. M. and Sarah (McDowell) Steele, also natives of Jessamine. His maternal grandparents were natives of Fayette and Jessamine Counties, and his paternal grandparents of Woodford County. William L. Steele was reared on the home farm until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted in the Twenty-first Kentucky Federal Infantry in October, 1861, served principally in the Twenty-first Army Corps, and was mustered out February 28, 1865. After his return he farmed until 1879, when he became a member of the firm of Butler & Co., dealers in grain. In addition to the interests named, he has a part ownership in a flouring mill seven miles from Nicholasville, which mill uses the roller process and has a capacity of seventy barrels per day, the firm name being L. M. Jackson & Co. In November 1868, he married Miss Anna E. Barkley, a native of Jessamine County, and there have been born to him two children: Lizzie and Sallie.
