Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. JOSEPH RUTHERFORD is a son of James and Julia A. (Hulse) Rutherford natives of Kentucky. Grandfather Joseph married Sallie Shelton, and had three children: Jessie, Sheldon and James. He removed to Missouri and died in 1830. James Rutherford was the father of seven children; one son, Hudson, was a physician located in Bath County, and at the breaking out of the civil war joined Humphrey Marshall's forces, Confederate States Army, and was made medical director for Marshall's brigade. At the close of the war he located in Harrison County, Ky., and died in 1866. He was married twice. His first wife, Eleanor Carlisle, had two children: Julia A. and Sarah M.; his second wife was Miss Elizabeth Hopwood, by whom he had five children: Mary, Mattie, Worth, John and Albert. Clairborne, the second son of James Rutherford, is a resident of Jessamine County; he has served two terms as deputy sheriff and once as sheriff of the county. The remaining five are named as follows: Joseph, James, Malvina, Sarah J. (Mrs. Benjamin L. Berry) and Julia A. Joseph Rutherford was born August 31, 1821, in Fayette County and received a common-school education. In 1842 he commenced the study of medicine with his brother, Clairborne, then removed to Bourbon County in 1845, and taught school for two years. In 1847 he returned to Jessamine County and engaged in farming; in 1866 he was elected sheriff and re-elected in 1868; he received the nomination for representative in 1871, but that year was again elected deputy sheriff in connection with G. D. Colley, sheriff. He was married in 1843 to Miss Susan Hopwood, daughter of James Hopwood, of Montgomery County, and has five children: Paulina (Mrs. John Marshall), Sarah B., Elizabeth, Ellen and Prudence. Mr. Rutherford is now engaged in raising stock, farming about forty acres. He is an active member of the Christian Church.
