Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. CAPT. S. R. OVERSTREET was born in Oldham County, Ky., near LaGrange, February 27, 1827. He was reared by a stepmother to the age of thirteen, when he was left entirely an orphan. He moved to Jessamine County, and learned the carpenter's trade under Andrew Hamilton, remaining with him until 1846, when, war being declared between the United States and Mexico, he enlisted in Capt. Willis' company, Second Kentucky Infantry, commanded by Cols. McKee and Clay. He served under Gen. Taylor, and participated in the battle of Beuna Vista. In 1849 he was married to Miss Martha Burton, of Jessamine County, daughter of Jefferson and Lucy (Gulley) Burton. To this union John W. was born April 8, 1848. He settled near Little Hickman, and was elected jailor [sic] in 1861 without opposition. At the breaking out of the late civil war he raised a large company of State militia, of which he was captain. He was afterward promoted to major. In 1866 he resigned the office of jailor [sic]. He also, while jailor [sic], held the office of city marshall at Nicholasville, which office he resigned in March, 1866, and moved to near Pitt's old mill and engaged in mercantile business with Hardin Knight as a partner, later with J. C. Ferrell. He finally bought a farm on Little Hickman, set up for himself a store and was engaged in that business at the time of his death. In 1875 he defeated Hon. N. D. Miles for representative by twenty-two votes; he served eighty-one days with credit to his constituents and himself. In 1878 he was elected justice of the peace, and was holding that office at his death. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and of the I.O.O.F., the A. F. & A. M. and of the association of the Mexican war veterans. Capt. Overstreet had been a great sufferer with heart disease for many years, but he stood the storm until Sunday, January 2, 1881, when he was taken suddenly ill with typhoid pneumonia, Drs. S. D. and J. C. Welch both attending him. Tuesday, January 11, 1881, at 11:30 he passed away.
