SAMUEL OVERSTREET was born on the farm where he now resides, five miles southwest of Nicholasville, January 10, 1828, and is the youngest son of Charles and Nancy (Alverson) Overstreet. Charles Overstreet was born in Jessamine County February 4, 1791, farmed all his life in this county and died in October, 1836. Nancy (Alverson) Overstreet was born in Madison County, Ky., October 17, 1792, and died December 14, 1855. Samuel's paternal grandfather, Thomas Overstreet, was born in Hanover County, Va., January 17, 1762; he, with his father, James Overstreet, moved from Virginia and settled in Fayette County, Ky., in 1789, and remained until 1791, then moved to Jessamine County. He was in the Revolutionary war, was in the battle of Cowpens, Guilford C.H., at Utah Springs in South Carolina, and died in Jessamine County April 4, 1832. Charles and Nancy (Samuel's father and mother) have five children living, viz.: Elizabeth (married to W. H. West), William, Monroe, James and Samuel. Samuel Overstreet was reared on a farm in Jessamine County, where he was born, and educated at the common schools. He was married, April 11, 1860, to Miss Anna M. Horine, of Nicholasville, daughter of Gen. John and Lucy B. (England) Horine. John Horine was born in Jessamine County November 23, 1804. He taught school about twenty-five years, principally in Jessamine County, also in Illinois. After his father, Jacob Horine, died, he went on the farm and remained until October, 1867, when he died. Lucy B. Horine was born in Garrard County, Ky., December 10, 1814, and died June 10, 1886. Jacob Horine came from Germany at quite an early day, settled where Nicholasville now stands, and died about 1842. Gen. Horine's maternal grandfather was the first practicing physician in Jessamine County. Mrs. Samuel Overstreet is a most intelligent lady and an authoress of some note. She has written for some time for the Apostolic Times, of Lexington, Ky., the Guide, of Louisville, and the Disciple, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her writings are mostly of a religious character. "Revelation Read" a book recently written by her has attained considerable popularity. Mr. and Mrs. Overstreet have had two children born to them: Lucy G., June 20, 1863, and Edward Y., November 21, 1867. Mr. Overstreet is a member of the Methodist Church, his wife of the Christian Church. He owns 100 acres of land in Lee District, five miles southwest of Nicholasville.
