Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. J. W. OVERSTREET, son of Capt. Samuel R. and Martha Overstreet, was born near his present home at Little Hickman, Jessamine Co., Ky., April 8, 1848; he removed with his parents to Nicholasville in September, 1860, his father having been elected jailer of Jessamine County. In 1862 he had a severe spell of typhoid fever, which caused a total deafness. He attended the institute for the deaf and dumb at Danville twelve months in 1865-66 and learned the dear [sic] and dumb manual, but had received a slight education before. He returned with his father to his present home in 1867, learned the carpenter's trade and worked at it until his father put up a store. He was married to Miss Sallie Knight November 16, 1871, but the marriage not being a happy one they separated, she going to Missouri and dying there. One son, J. H. Overstreet, was born to them, now fourteen years old. J. W. Overstreet clerked in his father's store until the latter's death. He was appointed postmaster at Little Hickman some ten years since, and has held the office with credit ever since. He is almost self educated, and writes for various newspapers. His second marriage was to Miss Lizzie Crutchfield December 13, 1882; they had one child, Beatrice. Mr. Overstreet owns eighty-two acres of good farm land eight miles southeast of Nicholasville.
