Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. OLIVER B. HUGGINS, a native of Jessamine County, Ky., was born January 7, 1832. He was the only son of Harvey C. and America B. (Bunnell) Huggins, natives of New Hampshire and Warren County, Ohio, respectively. His great-grandfather was progenitor of two brothers who came from England about 1700 and landed at Portsmouth, N. H. One of the above settled in Greenland, N. H., and Oliver B. is a direct lineal descendant of this brother. Harvey C. Huggins was a son of Samuel Huggins, who was the eldest son of the brother who settled in Greenland. The father of O. B. came from New Hampshire about 1826 to Cincinnati, where he became a clerk, and in 1829 he came to Jessamine County. Harvey C.'s profession was teaching. He was born in 1807, came to Jessamine County in 1829, and died in February, 1885. He remained in Jessamine County until his death, and his principal business was surveying. Oliver B. Huggins was reared on the farm, and received a good English education, studying under his father, making a specialty of surveying, and has followed that profession for twenty-five years. He was county surveyor some eight or ten years, but resigned, having more surveying out of the county than in it. He was married, October 25, 1852, to Miss Emily Coffman, a native of Jessamine County, and daughter of David C. Coffman, a native of Virginia. They have five children living: Mary Elizabeth, John C., America B., Harriett Emma and Harvey C. He owns 880 acres, all lying in Keene Precinct, and has a pleasant home on the Lexington and Harrodsburg Pike, four miles from Nicholasville northwest of the town. He comes from an old Puritan New England family. Harvey Chase Huggins was a first cousin of Judge Salmon P. Chase, secretary of the treasury under Lincoln. His character was elevated by the highest principles of integrity, and he was invested with a charm which drew around him the love and esteem of all who were personally acquainted with him. He succeeded in amassing the wealth he left his son and only child. In politics he was a Republican.
