Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. JOHN W. HOLLOWAY, M. D., is a native of Jessamine County, Ky., was born April 30, 1823, and is the third son of Spencer and Catherine (Reid) Holloway, natives of Jessamine County and Tennessee respectively. His grandfather, Sir James Holloway, a Virginian, who was captain in the Revolutionary war, immigrated to Jessamine County very early. Spencer Holloway was born in 1792, was a farmer, and died in 1883. John W. Holloway's maternal grandfather, George Reid, came from Scotland to Tennessee, but was of English origin on his father's side. John W. Holloway was reared on the farm until twenty-three, when he went to Louisville and began the study of medicine under John L. Price, and continued three years; during this time he was under Drs. Gross and David W. Yandall; then took a general course in surgery and medicine, and was graduated in 1850 from the medical department of the University of Louisville. He began practice the same year at Keene, and has since continued his profession. He has been extensively engaged in farming, and is also an extensive stock raiser. He was married, November 11, 1852, to Martha Elizabeth Cleveland, a native of Jessamine County, daughter of George Cleveland (deceased), who was also a native of Jessamine County. Her mother was a daughter of Hockings Craig, who was noted in the early history of Kentucky for his eloquent preaching. Hockings Craig was not a minister, but a descendent of the Craigs, who were noted, and imprisoned for preaching the gospel according to the discipline of the Baptist Church. Of the children born to Mr. Holloway four are living: Mollie (in Knoxville, Tenn., married to H. S. Mizner), George C., Spencer E. and John B. The Doctor has had a very large, successful and lucrative practice, commencing in the start with very little, and by his business qualities has made a grand success, and owns about 700 acres in Keene Precinct.
