Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. R. W. HOCKER was born in Lincoln County, Ky., December 9, 1853, and is the second son of J. M. and Harriet J. (Morrison) Hocker. J. M. Hocker was born in Lincoln County June 28, 1822. He great-grandfather immigrated to the United States from the Republic of Switzerland in colonial times. The name was originally Hecker, and was known as such in the day of William Tell (1534), and as "e" in German has the same sound as short "o" in English, the name was pronounced and spelled Hocker. Col. Hecker rendered material aid to William Tell, that distinguished man, in freeing his country from Austrian Tyranny. The great-great-grandfather of the subject, on his arrival in the United States, settled near Baltimore, Md. His great-grandfather moved to Kentucky about the year 1785 and settled in Lincoln County, near Sanford, Ky. His grandfather married Miss Elizabeth Dunn, of Garrard County, about the year 1810. His mother, Harriett J. Morrison, was born March 14, 1829, daughter of John Morrison, who spent the last few years of his life with President Sam Houston, fighting for the independence of Texas. She is directly related on her mother's side to Gen. Logan, who did active service for his country in the war of 1812. R. W. Hocker was educated at Bethany College, West Virginia, married September 1, 1875, Miss Mary A. Handy, daughter of Walter and Mary (Moore) Handy, and the granddaughter of the late Col. John G. Handy, of Mercer County, one of the most prominent men in the settlement of Kentucky. They have had five children, four living: Mattie H., Walter H., Richard Wesley and Harriet M. Mr. and Mrs. Hocker are members of the Christian Church. He is now actively engaged in farming in Jessamine County, Ky. Postoffice address Wilmore, Ky.
