Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. CHARLES HEMPHILL was born seven miles east of Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Ky., on the 17th of November, 1832, and is the second and eldest son living of Andrew and Mildred Tapp, the latter a daughter of Lewis Tapp, a descendant of the French Huguenots who settled at Mannican Town, on the James River in Virginia, soon after the edict of Nantes was revoked by Louis XIV, in 1685. The mother of Mrs. Hemphill was Milly Chowning (of Scotch ancestry), from Virginia, who, with her husband, Lewis Tapp, settled in the eastern part of Jessamine County in 1795. Andrew Hemphill was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1800. He came to Jessamine County about 1820, and engaged in teaching school, being a good Latin and Greek scholar. He died in 1865, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Mildred, his wife, died in 1859. Charles Hemphill was married, on the 17th of January, 1858, to Miss Naomi B. Willmore, daughter of James C. Willmore of Jessamine County. Mrs. Hemphill is the granddaughter, on her mother's side, of Gen. William Olds, who was a native of Washington County, Penn. When a very young man he and William H. Carroll left Pittsburgh on a flatboat, and landed at Louisville. This was in 1803. Young Carroll afterward settled at Nashville, Tenn., and became one of the most distinguished citizens of that State. In the war of 1812 he was a major-general, under Gen. Jackson at the battle of New Orleans, January 8, 1815. His descendants are very numerous in Tennessee. Gen. William Olds married Annie Welch, daughter of John Welch, in 1806. He died in 1849. The names of the children born to Charles and Naomi B. Hemphill are Kate Ann, Lillie May, Minnie Lee and Henry (deceased). Mr. hemphill is the owner of 479 acres of good land, on the pike leading to the village of Sulphur Well. His honesty, integrity and ability have given him great success. He has always been a producer, hence he is always independent.
