Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Jessamine Co. JAMES H. DEAN was born November 17, 1838, and is the second son of Harrison and Nancy (Owen) Dean. Harrison Dean was born about five miles northwest of Harrodsburg, in Mercer County, Ky., November 15, 1812. He is the fifth son of James and Keziah (Green) Dean. He moved to Jessamine County in 1832, and rented land for several years; moved to McLean County, Ill., and remained one year, and then returned to Jessamine County, and farmed again. Nancy (Owen) Dean was born in Jessamine County, and is the daughter of Fleming and Annie (Tombs) Owen, both born in Halifax County, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Dean are both living, and comfortably situated on a farm of 167 acres in Sulphur Well District, nine miles southeast of Nicholasville, near Little Hickman Church. He is engaged in farming and raising stock. James H. Dean was reared on a farm in Jessamine County where he was born, and farmed until 1861, then went into the dry goods business in Madison County, Ky., remaining there about six months, then removed his stock of goods to Sulphur Well, and remained there about a year. Andrew Ferrell was a partner in Madison County, also at Sulphur Well, Mr. Dean selling out to him a short time after moving. In a few months he went into business again with C. B. Baner, on Little Hickman Creek in this county, and remained here about one year. In 1864 he bought a farm and farmed until 1873, then sold his farm, and went into the grocery business at Nicholasville with A. T. Hamilton as a partner; in 1879 sold the stock to T. A. Lee, and bought the farm he now lives on, situated on the Nicholasville and Paint Lick Turnpike. Mr. Dean was married, January 1, 1879, to Miss Ella Miles, daughter of B. F. and Mary J. (Welch) Miles, both of Jessamine County. Two children were born to them: Mary Agnes, born May 23, 1882, and Charles McCampbell, born November, 22, 1886. Mr. Dean is a member of the Christian CHurch; his wife is a Baptist. He owns 153 acres of land in Sulphur Well District.
