Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. p. 209. Jefferson County. ALEXANDER POPE HUMPHREY was born in Louisville, Kentucky, January 26, 1848. His father was the eminent Presbyterian minister, Rev. Edward P. Humphrey, D.D., LL.D.; his mother was of the well known Pope family of Louisville. He was educated at Center College, Danville, Kentucky and was graduated in law at the University of Virginia. Inheriting strong mental endowments and enjoying the best advantages in his early training, he so improved both that it may be said of him, what can be said of few persons, he made the best use of the best opportunities. Coming to the bar immediately after his graduation, he at once made the impression of an earnest, industrious young practitioner with unusual capability, learning and mental training. It was evident he was destined to excel in the highest walks of his profession. His career has made good this earlier promise. He soon became a member of the leading firm of Barr, Goodloe & Humphrey, and was engaged in the conduct of much responsible and important litigation, in which his ability was thoroughly demonstrated. Being appointed to the office of chancellor of the Louisville chancery court, to fill the unexpired term of Judge H. W. Bruce, resigned, he made the reputation of one of the best judges who ever held that position, and this notwithstanding he was only thirty-two years of age, and that bench had been filled by men of the highest ability, including Chancellors Logan and Pirtle. Upon his retirement from the bench he became a member of the well-known law firm of Brown, Humphrey & Davie, and since the death of Colonel John Mason Brown, of that firm, he has continued to practice with George M. Davie. Very much of the most important litigation of the Louisville bar, and indeed of the state of Kentucky is intrusted to this firm. As lawyers and as citizens both Judge Humphrey and Mr. Davie enjoy the highest confidence and esteem. Judge Humphrey married Miss Mary Moss Churchill, daughter of Alexander Pope Churchill, of Louisville, and they have four children living.
