Converted at an early age he was baptized into the fellowship of the Salvisa Baptist Church by Elder W. P. Harvey. His ordination took place at his home church in April, 1884. In preparation for the ministry Dr. Holtzclaw attended Georgetown College and the Southern Baptist Seminary. By patient study he received the Degree of Ph.D. from Ewing College, Illinois, and still later was given the Degree of Doctor of Divinity by the same institution. He became noted as an author, pastor, and evangelist. He frequently wrote for the religious papers of his day, and was the author of several tracts and a book, "The Women of Today." The subject of our sketch was pastor of prominent churches in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Georgia, and Kentucky. His connection with this Association was as pastor of the Walnut Street Baptist Church from 1891 to March, 1895. From here he went to a church in Louisville. Brother Holtzclaw was first married to Miss Florence Early. One daughter blessed this union. His son and daughter and second wife survived him. He was living in Louisville a short time before his death and had just accepted the call to the pastorate of the Granite City Baptist Church, Granite City, Illinois, when he was called to his eternal home on November 2, 1918. His remains were interred in the Cave Hill Cemetery in the city of Louisville. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
