Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 8th ed., 1888, Jefferson Co. PHILIP HAGER was born in the city of Louisville in 1843, and is a son of Charles and Barbara Hager, both natives of Bavaria, Germany. The subject of this sketch was reared in Louisville and began life for himself as a clerk; later he learned the trade of a jeweler. In 1862 he enlisted in the United States navy, served about thirteen months, and was after engaged on the gun-boat Connestoga for about one year during the war; on his return after the war, he engaged in business. In 1878 he formed a partnership with J. R. Hetch, and is now carrying on a good business at 351 Fourth avenue. Mr. Hager was married, in 1869, to Miss Bertha Schuckman, and is now the father of three children: Belle, Addie and Amelia. He is a member of the G.A.R., and adjutant of the George H. Thomas Post.
