Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. p. 223. Jefferson County. PATRICK HENRY DARBY, of Louisville, brother of Franklin Wyatt Darby, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume, was born in Caldwell county, Kentucky, on the 23d of September, 1844, and acquired his education in Cumberland College, of Princeton, and at the University of Virginia. Later he entered the law department of the University of Michigan and after the completion of a thorough course of study was admitted to the bar in Princeton, in 1870. From that time to the present he has been a conspicuous figure in legal circles and has been connected with some of the most important litigation of the state. He became attorney for the Elizabethtown & Paducah Railroad, serving from 1870 to 1877 as local attorney for that road for the counties of Caldwell, Lyon and Hopkins, while from 1877 until 1882 he was assistant general attorney and claim agent for the road. In the latter year he came to Louisville, where he has now made his home for fourteen years. From 1882 until 1886 he was attorney and claim agent for the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern Railroad Company; and from 1886 until 1893 was division attorney for the Newport News, the Mississippi Valley and the Chesapeake, Ohio & Southwestern Railroad Companies, at Louisville. Since January, 1895, he has been the general attorney for the last named company. He has made a specialty of corporation law, but is thoroughly well versed in all branches of his profession. There are no rules for building characters; there is no rule for achieving success; both come as the result of the sorting out of nature's endowments, the utilization of surrounding opportunities, above all the exercise of determined effort and honorable dealing. A man in this way wins the esteem of all with whom he comes in contact and secures for himself a measure of success. Learning, research, perseverance and energy have brought to Mr. Darby an enviable reputation as a legal practitioner, and he is widely known as a member of the state bar. In 1870 was consummated the marriage of Mr. Darby and Miss Mary L. McNary, a daughter of Dr. T. L. McNary, of Princeton, Kentucky. They have three children, Mary L., Nanny F. and Lucy. Mr. Darby is a Mason, while his religious belief connects him with the Presbyterian Church. Darby McNary = Caldwell-KY VA MI http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/jefferson/darby.ph.txt
