Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, by H. Levin, editor, 1897. Published by Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press. pp. 244-45. Jefferson County. CLARENCE DALLAM, of Louisville, was born in Henderson, on the 14th of April 1863, and his ancestral history is one of close connection with Kentucky during its formative period and through the epoch of its later development. His grandfather, Nathan Dallam, was one of the pioneers of the state, emigrating from Maryland to Princeton, Kentucky, when much of the "dark and bloody ground" was still in its primeval state, awaiting the awakening touch of civilization. He was married at Winchester, Kentucky, to Sarah Hicks, a native of Virginia. Their son, L. C. Dallam, father of our subject, is a prominent citizen of Henderson. He married Elizabeth Henderson Soaper, daughter of William Soaper, a tobacconist of that city. Through her mother, Mrs. Dallam was related to Colonel Richard Henderson, the founder of the city which bears his name. The Dallam family is also connected by marriage with the Alves and the Calloways, who came from North Carolina to Kentucky with Richard Henderson and the Transylvania Company. Francis Henry Dallam, an uncle of our subject, was one of the most distinguished lawyers of the Henderson bar, and is represented elsewhere in this volume. The early educational privileges which Clarence Dallam received were supplemented by study in the Episcopal high school, of Alexandria, Virginia, from 1881 to 1884, after which he entered the academic department of the University of Virginia, taking a course in Greek and Latin, and was graduated in the latter. He then pursued a course in the law department in the same institution, and was graduated in 1886 with the degree of Bachelor of Law, which was taken in one year. Admitted to the bar and licensed to practice in Kentucky, Mr. Dallam opened an office in Paducah in the fall of 1886, and in 1888 became associated in business in that city with Henry Burnett, as a member of the law firm of Burnett & Dallam, devoting his attention chiefly to corporation law, and represented some of the largest corporations in western Kentucky. This relation was maintained until the 1st of February, 1897, when Mr. Dallam removed to Louisville, seeking a field of labor in the state's metropolis, where his abilities, which have already won him recognition as one of the representative and enterprising young legal practitioners, may have a broader range. On the 1st of June, 1893, Mr. Dallam married Miss Cantey McDowell Venable, daughter of Colonel Charles S. Venable, who for many years was professor of mathematics in the University of Virginia, and who served through the war as a colonel on the staff of the brilliant commander of the Confederate forces, General Robert E. Lee. She is a granddaughter of Governor James McDowell, of Virginia, who is of the same family as the McDowells of Kentucky. The first of the name to come to this state was Samuel McDowell, who was prominently identified with the early settlement and substantial development of the commonwealth. Mr. Dallam is a Democrat, but is not specially active in politics. He belongs to the Episcopal church, and served as vestryman while in Paducah. In his profession he is an untiring worker, preparing his cases with the utmost regard to the detail of fact and the law involved. He never loses sight of even the most minor point which may advance his clients' interest, and at the same time gives full weight to the important point upon which the decision finally turns. His argument is incisive and logical, his enunciation clear and decided and his delivery strong. He views his case from every possible standpoint, loses sight of no vantage ground or of any available point of attack in an opponent's argument. He stoops to no questionable methods, is fair and just to the opposition, and has the sincere respect of the members of the bar. In manner he is ever courteous and genial, his deportment at all times bespeaking the character of the true gentleman.
