Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 8th ed., 1888, Jefferson Co. JOHN H. BRAND was born in Woodford County, Ky., October 6, 1841, and is a son of George W. and Nannie (Griffith) Brand, the former a native of Lexington, and the latter of Natchez, Miss. He was reared principally in Woodford County, and after the advantages of the local schools, was sent to St. Timothy's College, near Baltimore, from which he graduated in 1860. He came to Louisville in 1865, and for a time was engaged with A. O. Brannin & Co. in the pork packing susiness. Retiring from the firm, he next engaged in the fancy grocery business, and with a spice mill. In 1881 he began to deal in tobacco, and at present, under the firm name of Brand & Bethel, does a large export business in tobacco. Mr. Brand was married in 1866, to Miss Lizzie Brannin, daughter of Mr. A. O. Brannin. He is one of the live, go-ahead business men of Louisville, and takes an active interest in its prosperity and welfare. He is an active Mason and a member of Louisville Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar.
