Used by permission. [Jefferson] WILLIAM COOKE BOONE, D.D.: This universally beloved minister of Jesus Christ was born in the City of Bowling Green, Ky., on February 8, 1892, and worthily bears a name that has long been an honored one in Kentucky's history. His father is Dr. Arthur Upshaw Boone, for many years pastor of the First Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn. His mother was Miss Eddie Belle Cooke. Bro. Boone's grandfather was Higgason G. Boone, a native of Todd County, Ky., and was born in the year 1806. He was a well-to-do farmer and an earnest member of a Baptist Church, of which he was clerk for fifty years. His father, Isaiah Boone, was a nephew of Daniel Boone, the noted Indian fighter and one of Kentucky's earliest settlers. Daniel Boone's grandfather was a native of England and became the founder of the Boone family in the new world. He settled in Pennsylvania about 1634 and the family migrated from that state to North Carolina and thence to Kentucky, in which they located in 1774. In the acquirement of an education Bro. Boone attended the public schools of Memphis, Tennessee, and in 1909 completed a course in the University school of that city. He then entered William Jewell College at Liberty, Missouri, from which he won the A.B. Degree in 1912 and that of A.M. in the following year. He was a student of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky., from 1912 until 1914. His ordination to the work of the ministry took place on March 24, 1914, at the First Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn., and in May, 1914, he became pastor of the First Baptist Church at Hernando, Mississippi, where he remained until July, 1916. He was assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church at Memphis, Tenn., for four months and from February, 1917, until August, 1918, had charge of the Baptist Church at Marianna, Arkansas. On September 1, 1918, he entered the pulpit of the First Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky. During his eight and one-half year pastorate here the numerical and financial strength of the church was greatly augmented. A total of 1,085 members were recived [sic] into the fellowship of the church by baptism, letter, and statement. The church gave a total of $102,500.00 to missions and almost $320,000.00 for all purposes. The vast majority of the above total went into the new building which was begun soon after Bro. Boone began his pastorate and was completed in 1924, at a cost of about $200,000.00. The church is of yellow brick structure with colonial pillars of white stone and is an ornament to the city. During his pastorate here the other phases of the church's work showed marked improvement. The subject of our sketch became pastor of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke, Virginia, on March 1, 1927. He remained here until sometime in 1930 when he accepted the Presidency of Oklahoma Baptist University. He returned to the pastorate in the latter part of 1932 and accepted the care of the First Baptist Church of Jackson, Tennessee. Afer [sic] a pastorate of eight years he entered into the pastorate of the Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1941, where he still labors. Bro. Boone has held numerous offices of honor in the denomination. He was vice-president of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1931. He has also served as a member of the State Mission Board of Kentucky Baptists a member of the Board of Managers of the Western Recorder, a trustee of Bethel College, a trustee of Union University, Jackson, Tenn., a member of the Executive Board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, etc. He is the author of two books, "What God Hath Joined Together," a series of sermons on marriage, and "What Baptists Believe," a study in the Baptist Faith. Our brother is an eloquent speaker, sending his messages straight to the hearts of the hearers, and a strong bond of sympathy has always existed between pastor and people. William Cooke Boone is one of Kentucky Baptists' most outstanding preachers. In September, 1915, he was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Trotter, a daughter of Dr. I. P. Trotter, an outstanding Baptist preacher of Mississippi for many years. Bro. and Mrs. Boone are the parents of four children: Ruth Trotter, Martha Maria, A. U. (II) and Nann Eager. The last three mentioned children were born while Bro. Boone was pastor here in Owensboro. His wife is a zealous church worker and has been through the years a valuable asset to her husband's ministry, aiding and encouraging him in every way. He received the Degree of D.D. from Georgetown College several years ago.
