JEFF DONALD MURPHY, of Redmond, Deschutes County, OR, was born August 28, 1947 in Bowling Green, Warren Co., KY, to Powell Davis Murphy and Marjorie (Morrison) Murphy. P.D. Murphy, or "Pete", was born December 30, 1924, in Earlington, Hopkins Co., KY. He was married July 22, 1945 to Marjorie, daughter of Porter and Lizzie Alma (Curlee) Morrison, of Athens, Henderson Co., Texas, in Earlington. They were the parents of three children: Jeff D.; David Porter, born April 6, 1950 in Nurnberg, Germany; and Sheryll Ann, born May 15, 1951 in Berlin, Germany. A career army officer, he and his family lived in (1948) Bowling Green, KY; (1948-49) Athens, TX; (1949-50) Bamberg, Germany; (1950-51) Berlin, Germany; (1951-52) Columbus, GA; (1952-54) Brookings, SD; (1954-55) Athens, TX (while he was in Korea); (1955-56) Columbus, GA; (1956-58) Ft. Benning, GA; (1958-59) Wurzburg, Germany; (1959-62) Ft. Campbell, KY; (1962-63) Ft. Leavenworth, KS; (1963-64) Athens, TX (while in Vietnam); (1964-67) Ft. Shafter, HI; (1967-68) Denton, TX (while on second tour of Vietnam, and (1968-71) the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. His death occurred October 12, 1991, in Lufkin, Angelina Co., TX. He was the son of Bernard Strother and Annie Thompson (Powell) Murphy. Bernard was the son of Jefferson Davis Murphy (after whom our subject was named) and Mary Blanche Hancock. Subject's mother was born December 27, 1923, in Athens, Henderson Co., TX; her father was born in Athens October 6, 1885, and her mother was born April 10, 1888 to John Edward and Mary Ann (Brown) Curlee at Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC. Jeff was educated in various local schools, graduating from Radford High School, Honolulu, HI, in 1965. He attended North Texas State University, Denton, TX, 1965-69, graduating with a B.M. in music composition; then attending Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 1970-72, working toward a degree in music theory, although his thesis was never completed; he also completed coursework at North Seattle Community College in 1975 to help find work in data processing. After leaving home in 1965 he lived in Denton, TX 1965-69; Provo, UT 1970-72; Seattle, WA 1972-79; Houston, TX 1979-85; Portland, OR 1985-94; and Redmond, OR 1994-present. While at BYU he taught music theory and ear training for two years as a graduate assistant. He then moved to Seattle, where he met his first wife, Helen Kathleen Sneddon; they were married in the Provo Temple, Provo, Utah Co., UT, October 11, 1974. Children of this marriage are: Leah Raquel, July 24, 1974, Seattle, King, WA; Joel Ethan, January 8, 1977, Seattle, King, WA; Laurel Joy, January 12, 1978, Seattle, King, WA; Brian Chad, February 13, 1981, Houston, Harris, TX; and Erin Beth, July 24, 1983, Houston, Harris, TX. Jeff worked in data processing as a programmer and systems analyst in Seattle, 1977-1979; Houston, 1980-1985; and Portland, 1986-1992, although most of this last period in Portland was spent as a consultant out of town, in Miami, Milwaukie, Kansas City, and Seattle. They were divorced April 1993 in Oregon. All the children reside in Portland with their mother. Because of chronic depression, Jeff was ruled disabled by the Social Security Administration, and has been retired since 1994. On July 8, 1994 he married his second wife, Debra Lynn (Cornwall) Jennings, Redmond, Deschutes Co., OR. Debra is the daughter of Jerry Lee and Carlyn Jo (Carter) Cornwall, born October 21, 1959, in Twin Falls, ID. This union has been blessed with two children: Asher Powell, born January 15, 1996, in Redmond, and Luet Dawn, born July 1 in Redmond. Debra has three children by a previous marriage: Charleen Lynn Jennings, David Bruce Jennings, and Diane Marie Jennings. In 1967 he won the Texas Federation of Music Clubs composer competition with his "Piece for Trumpet in C". He has written and published several articles on music in the worship services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of which he is a member. Several of his works have been performed at the Mormon Festival of Arts, held annually at BYU. Jeff plays dixieland clarinet and sings barbershop, and has directed church choirs and barbershop choruses. He has been a member of the Society for the Perservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. He currently spends most of his time in front of his computer, working on his genealogy. In December, 1995, he created the Muhlenberg Co., KY web site on the Internet, which has been followed by the KYGenWeb Project, the USGenWeb Project, and the KY Biographies Project. In politics he is an independent, voting against whichever party has done the most damage recently.
