AMOS BASSETT was born September 15, 1815, in Bracken County, Ky. 
He is a son of John and Jane (Rogison) Bassett.  The father was
born three miles from Pittsburgh, and when a boy moved to Mason 
County, Ky., and later to Bracken County.  There he lived many 
years engaged in agricultural pursuits, and was sheriff of that 
county twenty-eight years.  He died in Webster County in February, 
1865, aged seventy-two.  His wife died in June, 1842.  Our subject 
was reared on his father's farm, and served as deputy sheriff from 
1834 to 1841, at which time he came to Hopkins County, and first 
bought eighty five acres of land, and engaged in farming.  He has 
bought and sold several tracts of land since, and now owns 112 
acres, which join Madisonville on the east.  Mr. Bassett was 
married, in 1842, to Lucy W. Nisbet, of Hopkins County.  This 
union has been blessed with eleven children, ten of whom are 
living - six sons and four daughters.  Mrs. Bassett is a member of 
the Christian Church.  Their farm is one of the oldest in the 
county, and once owned by Mr. McGarey, in whose house the first 
county election was held.
