Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. WILLIAM J. TURNER, a well known farmer and stock dealer of Henry County, Ky., was born in that county, August 21, 1840, to Joseph B. and Martha A. (Jones) Turner. Joseph B. was born in Culpeper County, Va., February 14, 1803; came to Kentucky in 1817, and settled on the farm in Henry County, where he still resides. He is a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and a man of considerable influence. He reared a family of thirteen children--nine boys and four girls. His wife, Mrs. Martha A. Turner, was born in Henry County in 1822, was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and a firm supporter of its principles, and died in the spring of 1850. Her father, William Jones, came to Kentucky when a youth and passed the greater part of his life in Henry County. At the age of twenty-one our subject engaged in farming for himself near Prestonville, Carroll County, and continued thus with success until the outbreak of the civil war. September 1, 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, Company I, Fourth Kentucky Cavalry, under Col. H. L. Giltner of Carroll County. He participated in the battles of Knoxville, Tenn., Saltville and Wytheville, Va., Mount Sterling (where he was wounded) and Cynthiana, Ky., Strawberry Plains, Mossy Creek, Rhea Town, Blue Springs, Bull's Gap, Bean's Station, East Tennessee, Marion, West Virginia and many others. In 1862 he was commissioned third lieutenant; promoted to second lieutenant in 1863, and subsequently to the rank of first lieutenant, in which capacity he served until the close of the war. He was a brave soldier, and received an honorable discharge at Mount Sterling, May 1, 1865. He then returned home, and engaged in farming near Turner's Station until 1867, when he moved to his place of 175 acres, in Turner's Station Precinct, where he has since successfully continued. November 30, 1865, he was united in marriage with Frances K. Montford, an estimable lady of Henry County, born March 15, 1850. Four sons and six daughters have bless their union: Mary A., born December 30, 1866; Caroline, born September 9, 1868; Joseph H., August 6, 1870; Robert F., March 16, 1872; George M., December 14, 1873; Bettie, June 21, 1875; Lena, April 1, 1877; Mattie J., November 20, 1879; Minnie F., February 21, 1882, and William J., March 10, 1885.
