Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. THOMAS SMOOT, a native of Owen County, Ky., was born on February 28, 1822, to William R. and Fanny (Clark) Smoot, natives of Virginia. His father came from Virginia in 1796, settled in Owen County, always followed farming, and was known as a good and upright citizen. His grandfather, Thomas Smoot, also came to Kentucky in 1796, and here died. Our subject was educated at the common schools, and has always followed the pursuits of the farm, in which he has been very successful, owning 205 acres of improved land in one tract in Henry County and 292 acres along the river. In 1845 he was united in marriage with Mary Kelly, daughter of William Kelly and Vianna (Moore) Kelly, both of Henry County. Five children were born to this union, named as follows: Vianna, William, Elbert, Mary and Edmond. Mrs. Smoot died in 1861, and in 1867 our subject was united in marriage with Mrs. Lucy Jones, widow of Dr. F. Jones, of Shelby County. To this last marriage six children were born, Letitia, Nancy, Mattie, Reuben, George and Sallie. Mr. Smoot is a Democrat.
