Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. DR. J. W. SARLLS, a leading practitioner of the Medical profession in Henry County, was born in Gallatin County, Ky., March 1, 1856, the fourth of a family of seven children born to Elijah and Elizabeth (Hoggins) Sarlls. His father was born in the State of New York, and devoted the greater portion of his life to merchandising, but of late years has engaged in farming and stock raising. Our subject remained in Gallatin County until he was sixteen years of age, then went to Ghent, Ky., and attended college for some time. In 1874 he commenced to read medicine; attended lectures in Louisville, Ky., in 1876-77, and in 1877-78 at the Louisville Medical College; graduated in 1878, and located at Lockport, Henry County, where he remained three years. He was very successful and had the confidence and best wishes of every one in the neighborhood. But he felt he should get all the new ideas he could, so in 1881-82 he attended the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia. He at once returned to his native State, located in New Castle and remained four years, where he enjoyed a good practice and the respect of the entire community. For the last few months he has been located at Bethlehem. November 6, 1881, he married Miss Rilda M. Douthit, of Henry County, daughter of S. P. Douthit, who is an ex-representative of Henry County.
