Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. J. W. RIDGWAY was born in 1843 in Henry County. His father, Richard Ridgway, was a farmer, a native of Henry County, but of Virginian ancestry, and died in 1852. His wife (subject's mother) was Joanna Hall, also a native of Henry County. J. W. is the second of a family of two children, and was educated in the county schools. He was reared a farmer. In 1875 he became deputy sheriff, and served in that capacity until 1886, when he was elected sheriff of his county for a term of two years. In 1875 he married Mary C., daughter of Henry Suddeth and Mary (Voils) Suddeth, of Henry County. One child blessed their union, M. Ridgway. Mr. Ridgway was a member of the Fifty-fourth Kentucky Regiment, and served about twelve months in the civil war, and was a brave soldier. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
