Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. GEORGE D. MONTFORT was born in Henry County, Ky., September 19, 1846, and is the only son of a family of one son and one daughter, born to William and Elizabeth (Vories) Montfort. His father was born in Henry County, October 24, 1816, was a farmer and carpenter, a member of the Baptist Church, and died July 15, 1856. Mrs. Elizabeth Montfort was a native of Henry County, born November 4, 1826; was a member of the Baptist Church, and died June 22, 1867. Subject's paternal grandfather, John Montfort, was a native of Pennsylvania, came to Kentucky in an early day and settled on a farm in Henry County, near Pleasureville, where he lived until his death. His maternal grandfather, Francis Vories, was a native of Shelby County, born in 1795; came to Henry County in his fourth year and settled on the farm, where the subject of this sketch now resides, in 1822, and lived there until his death, April 24, 1882. He took and active part in politics but never aspired to office. Our subject passed his early life on the farm. He enlisted in the Federal Army September 1, 1864, Company G, Fifty-fourth Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Harvy M. Buckley, of New Castle. He served his country until honorably discharged at Louisville, Ky., September 19, 1865. He immediately returned to his home and engaged in farming. He was united in marriage, November 1, 1866, with Sarah E. Johnston, born September 29, 1844, an estimable lady of Henry County, who died July 15, 1878. The birth of three sons and one daughter followed their union: William N., born August 8, 1867; John C., February 4, 1870; Cordelia A., March 29, 1875, and Benjamin L., April 28, 1877. His second marriage occurred September 3, 1879, with Flora Vories, of Henry County, who was born July 25, 1855, and died August 28, 1885, the mother of one son and one daughter: Arthur Garfield, born January 1, 1881, and Sarah E., born July 26, 1882. Politically Mr. Montford has been a life-long Republican. He has a well cultivated farm of 127 acres in Turner's Precinct, which he successfully manages.
