Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. DR. JOHN McROBERTS was born November 28, 1809, near Stanford, Lincoln Co., Ky., where his father and grandfather both lived, having come from Virginia in an early day. They crossed the mountains at Cumberland Gap, when the country was a vast wilderness, and settled in Lincoln County. His grandparents came from Ireland in 1773, and settled in Virginia. His parents were George and Sallie (Embree) McRoberts; the former was born in Ireland in 1775, was brought to this country when two years old, and died September 27, 1821; the latter was born in 1778, and died in December, 1841. John was educated in the schools of his day, later began the study of medicine, and at the age of twenty four commenced to practice in Missouri, whither he had removed in 1828. He remained there four years, and then came to Campbellsburg, Ky., where he resided six years. He then returned to Stanford, Lincoln County, and three years later moved to Lawrenceburg, Anderson County. Before moving to Lawrenceburg, however, he went into the drug business, which he continued for seventeen years. In 1863 he moved to Eminence, where he has since been engaged in the same business. He married, in 1833, Miss Nancy Massie, daughter of James Massie, of Mercer County, Ky. She died in 1885, after a married life of over fifty years. To this union were born two children: Sarah E. and George M., both deceased. George M. was born June 26, 1838, and died September 28, 1874, and at the time of his death was engaged in the drug trade at Eminence. He married Miss Hattie Duke, who was born April 2, 1842. She is a lady of refinement, intelligence and great business capacity, and is now assisting her father-in-law in the drug trade. One child blessed their union: George M., who was born December 11, 1868, and is now a bright, energetic and promising young man. Mrs. Hattie McRoberts' father, David Duke, was born June 8, 1808, at Carlisle, Cumberland Co., Penn., and died February 18, 1884. Her mother was born October 16, 1820, at Georgetown, Ky., and died June 17, 1872. Her brother, Alexander Duke, was sheriff of Howard County, Ind., in 1882, and another brother, George Duke, was clerk of the same county from 1878 to 1880. Dr. McRoberts has been a member of the Christian CHurch since 1838.
