Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. WILLIAM W. HAWKINS was born in Virginia, May 10, 1836, the second of five children of William W. and Ellen Hawkins. He left Virginia in infancy with his parents, who immigrated to Kentucky and located at Georgetown. When he was eight years old they moved to Bowling Green, Ky., and five years later to Greenridge, where they taught the high school; a few years later moved to Lancaster, where young Hawkins entered college, thence our subject went to Lawrenceburg, Ky., from there to Midway, Ky., from there to New Castle, Ky., from there his father moved to Brownsville, West Tenn., where he taught a female school, then moved back to Kentucky in 1860, and taught at the Kentucky Military Institute. Early in 1861 our subject entered the rebel army under Breckinridge; was in the Fourth Kentucky Regiment Volunteers, under Roger Hanson, in what is known as the Orphan's Brigade; was in the battle of Shiloh and Baton Rouge and the celebrated charge at Stone River, Tenn., in January, 1862, where Breckinridge lost 1,700 men in a half hour; he was also in the battle of Chickamauga, September 20, 1863, and all the subsequent battles of his regiment until the close of the war. He returned home in 1865, near the Kentucky Military Institute, Franklin County; from there the family moved to Scott County, Ky., and went to farming. While there our subject went to Texas and remained two years; he also traveled through Arkansas. He lived in Scott County about fourteen years, and in 1882 they sold out, and moved to Springfield, Mo. Not liking the country our subject returned to Kentucky, and is now living in Henry County, where he owns 105 acres of land, on which he settled in 1883. In August of the same year he was united in marriage to Mrs. Emma Penn, widow of the late Charles Penn, and daughter of George and Sarah Roach. To this union have been born two sons: John T. and George A. Mrs. Hawkins is a member of the Christian Church.
