Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. WILLIAM J. GURLITZ was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, January 18, 1853, the youngest of a family of three sons born to Harold and Julia Gurlitz. His father was a native of Riga, Russia; came to America when about forty years of age, and settled at Galveston, Tex. He subsequently moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he died in 1854; his widow, also a native of Riga, died in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1881. Our subject received his education in Woodward High School, from which institution he graduated in the fall of 1869. He was then engaged about four years at photography at Dayton, Ohio, Paris, Georgetown, Lusby's Mills and Owenton, Ky., at which place he successfully practiced the art. In 1880 he engaged in general merchandising at Turner's Station, where he is also employed by the Adams Express Company, and agent of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. He was united in marriage, July 20, 1883, with Sallie Harris, of Henry County, daughter of J. L. Harris, and the birth of two sons followed their union: Joseph L. (deceased) and James L. Politically Mr. Gurlitz is a Democrat, and in 1880 was appointed magistrate of Turner's Precinct, and served one term. He is a member of the masonic fraternity, Owen Lodge, No. 28, Owenton and a chapter member of Emanuel Lodge, I.O.O.F., Owenton, Ky., in which he has occupied the chair as N.G., and received the degrees in the encampment.
