Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Henry Co. HON. S. BRUCE was born in Henry County, Ky., September 15, 1839, the youngest child born to John and Harriet (Owen) Bruce, the latter a native of Henry County. John was a native of Virginia and a son of William, who was a descendant of Robert Bruce, of Scotland. Our subject was reared on a farm, and educated in the best schools of the neighborhood. November 10, 1860, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Roberts, of Henry County, Ky., a daughter of James W. Roberts, of Henry County, and niece of Judge Pryor. Mrs. Bruce died May 8, 1880, a member of the Methodist Episcopal CHurch, and the mother of the following named children: William P., Lida, Mary, Waller, Lula, Jonna, Bertie, Hattie and Charlie. In 1872, Mr. Bruce was elected magistrate, and served until 1880; was then elected county judge of Henry County, and re-elected in 1884. As a judge he is a spirit of friendship and compromise between litigants; is a gentleman of pleasing manners and a favorite with all who know him. His neighbors and friends find in him a judicious counselor, ever ready to assist by his advice, or if need be by his means. Few men have lived so long in popular political favor and made so few enemies, and the secret of his success rests in his stanch adherence to principle and a thorough performance of every official duty.
