Also taken from Barren's Black Roots, Vol. 3, Michelle B. Gorin, (C) May 1993. Used by permission. MRS. LUCY BEARD, of Horse Cave, Ky., was born in A. D. 1844. She professed a hope in Christ in A. D. 1868 and was baptized by Rev. Spot Underwood. There was no church organized then at Horse Cave and a few members from different places met and held a revival at Bro. Ned Massey's residence and it was there that Sister Beard made peace with God. After the meeting they organized the first Baptist church of Horse Cave with Sister Beard in the organization. Sisters Lucy Beard and Lizzie Nullily are the only two members living, who were in the organization. She is the widow of deacon J. F. Beard and has been a servant of the church for 50 years, always living a consistent member. She is 74 years of age.
