LEWIS L. JENKINS, of Elizabethtown, is the third of a family of five
children born to Robert Charles and Sarah Jenkins. His father was born and
reared in the city of New York, where he received a fine English education.
In early life he came to Kentucky, and settled in Meade County, and at once
engaged in the profession of teaching, to which he devoted himself for a
period of more than half a century and, until enfeebled by age, he was
compelled to retire from the educational field. He married in Meade County
Miss Sarah H. Lawson, a daughter of James and Polly Lawson, an early and
honored family of that county, who came from Virginia. Sarah H. (Lawson)
Jenkins was born near Harrodsburg, Va., but was a mere child when the
family moved to Kentucky. The family of Robert and Sarah H. Jenkins are
George W., James L., Lewis L., John L., and Jeremiah H. Jenkins. Lewis L.
(subject) and John L. are the only surviving ones. The mother died in
August, 1851, and the father in the year 1874. Lewis L. Jenkins was born in
Hardin County, September 30, 1829. He was reared on the farm, to the
pursuits of which he has devoted most of his life, and in which he has been
more than ordinarily successful. Since 1883 he has been a resident of
Elizabethtown, engaging in the livery business. He married, in 1853, Eliza
B. Nall, daughter of John S. and Louisana (Buckner) Nall. Their children
are Sarah E., wife of Andrew Hunt; Mary E., deceased wife of George
Roberts, of Meade County; Clinton N., of Meade County; Moranda E., wife of
J. T. Bland, of Meade County; Minnie Bell; Lula, wife of Augustus Dowell;
Byron L. (deceased); Arthur and Addie Jenkins. The family are members of
the Baptist Church.
