Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Hardin Co. HORACE W. ENGLISH. About the year 1812 Noah English, in company with four of his brothers, came from Virginia and settled in Hardin County, from whom have sprung many of the leading families of that and adjoining counties, comprising an important factor in the permanent citizenship of that portion of the State. Noah English was an early surveyor here; was married in Virginia to Miss Wyatt, and had two sons, the younger of whom was Robert English. His second wife was a Miss Richards, and to them were born several children, of whom the Rev. James English, of Missouri, is one. Robert English, above mentioned, commonly known as Maj. English, was born in Virginia in 1804; was reared principally on a farm, but was early employed as a store boy and salesman, thus laying the foundation of his prosperous career as a merchant. He served as sheriff of Hardin County for four years, and also represented the county in the State Legislature. He married Elizabeth Crutcher, who died in 1838, leaving three children, viz.: Elvira, wife of Hon. E. Dudley Walker, of Ohio County; Horace W.; Emma, wife of Warren C. Bethel. He next married Amelia (Wathen) Wade, and died in 1865. Horace W. English was born January 5, 1836; was educated briefly by Prof. Henry Cecil, and at St. Mary's College, but before completing the course at the latter school he became deputy sheriff of Hardin County, and served four years. He was again appointed to the same office in 1874, and the following year was elected sheriff. He has devoted his life mainly to the pursuits of agriculture, and owns a valuable farm near Elizabethtown. Mr. English was married in Hardin County, in 1859, to Hettie C. Wade, daughter of James S. Wade. She died in 1868, leaving three children: Robert W., Lizzie S. and Hugh B. English. His present wife, to whom he was married in 1873, was Miss Ruth, daughter of John Troutman, a prominent farmer of Nelson County, Ky. Seven children have been born to them as follows: Proctor, Anna T., Lida W., Laura K., Bell T., Louisa L. and Hattie A. English. Mr. English is a Council member of the Masonic order.
