Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Greenup County ELJAS M. PRYSE, proprietor of the Pryse Hotel at Beattyville, Ky., was born at Ysbytly Ystwyth, near Abarytwyth, Cardigan Shire, Wales, August 6, 1838, and is a son of John and Elizabeth (Jones) Pryse, of Wales. He was reared and educated in his native country, and in early life devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits, but had for a number of years been engaged in mercantile business in London, before coming to America. He came to America on the 11th of July, in 1865, and settled at Beattyville, Ky., where for several years he was engaged in mercantile business and dealt also in coal. September 17, 1867, he married Miss Elizabeth Bowman, a daughter of Joel and Catherine Bowman, of Lee County. To this union were born six children, viz: Mary A., John M., Jennie J., Mattie L., Zachary T. and William Shelby (died November 3, 1881). Mrs. Pryse died May 31, 1881, and May 23, 1883, Mr. Pryse married Miss Mira Bowman, a daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth Bowman, of Lee County. Three children blessed this union, Willie T., Helen Mira and Charles S. (died September 8, 1887). Mr. And Mrs. Pryse are members of the Episcopal Church.
