Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887, Green County. ROBERT F. CRADDOCK was born August 10, 1837, and is a son of Creed H. and Eliza G. (Sandridge) Craddock, who had born to them four sons and seven daughters, eight of whom lived to be grown. Creed H. Craddock was of English descent, was born in Virginia, came to Kentucky and settled in Green County as early as 1820; was a substantial farmer and owner of slaves, served as magistrate for several years; in an early day flatboated out of Green River to New Orleans, and died in 1862, aged fifty-three years. Mrs. Eliza G. Craddock was a daughter of Pleasant and Elizabeth (Edwards) Sandridge, who emigrated from Virginia in an early day. The father was an extensive farmer and long served as magistrate and sheriff. Robert F. Craddock was raised on the farm in his native county of Green and attended the common schools, receiving a liberal English education. In October 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Twenty-seventh Kentucky Infantry, and was in all the principal engagements in which the regiment participated. While at the siege of Knoxville his life was saved by a testament, which he carried in his pocket, receiving a musket ball. In April, 1865, he was discharged as a non-commissioned officer. After his return home he engaged in farm life for two years, when he embarked in the distilling business; two years later he engaged in the grocery business. Then, after two years, he was engaged in the dry goods business for six years, since when he has run a mill at Osceola. He is the owner of three small farms, containing in all 170 acres, and also owns an interest in a tannery, although he started even in life after his return from the army. In February, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma F. Gooch, a daughter of A. E. and Lydia C. (Gardner) Gooch, and there have been by this happy union two children: Edward L. and Chas. W. Mrs. Craddock died in 1876, and he married his second wife, Mrs. Nancy J. Whitlock, in February, 1877. She is a daughter of Edward Perry. Mr. Craddock is a member of the F. & A. M., was a member of the Grange; in politics he is an active Democrat, has been a member of the central committee since the war, and his first presidential vote was for John Bell; with his wife he is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
