WILLIAMS, one of the chief justices of the court of appeals, resided at the time of his elevation to the bench in Mayfield. He was a prominent figure in the western part of the state, a delegate to the Democratic national convention in 1860, in Charleston, and was one of the delegates who aided in the nomination of J. C. Breckinridge for the presidency. In 1861 he was a delegate to the border state convention in the interest of harmony and peace, and on the opening of the war espoused the cause of the Union. In 1862 he was elected for a full term of eight years to the court of appeals bench, and during the last two years of his service was chief justice.
