PETTIE, D.D.: This distinguished minister and servant of Jesus Christ was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, March 24, 1851, on a farm about five miles southwest of Versailles. After attending the country schools he entered Georgetown College, when seventeen years of age and remaind [sic] four years. In his sixteenth year in a revival meeting he surrenderd [sic] all to the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized into the fellowship of the Hillsboro Church, located about two miles from his birthplace. He was licensed to preach by this church in 1869, and on May 12, 1872, was ordained by the same church. His first pastorate was at Clear Creek Church near Versailles, and four miles from his birthplace. After this pastorate and some others he held the pastorate of the First Church in Mayfield, Kentucky, for fifteen years. He also served Hartford, Hickman, Clinton, Adairville, Lawrenceburg, Owensboro Third, Whitesville, Bethabara, and Oak Grove (Utica), all in his native state. He also served the churches at Columbia, Tenn.; Ozark and Jonesboro, Ark.; and Tampa, Florida. For years he served on the Board of Trustees of the Baptist Bible Institute in New Orleans, La. He was one of the founders and one of the first Trustees of the Baptist Education Society of Kentucky. For many years he served as a member of the State Mission Board in Kentucky. Besides all the other activities already mentioned he was an eminent revivalist, conducting meetings in most of the states of the Southern Baptist Convention. Dr. Pettie was ill for several years before his death, in his eightieth year on November 14, 1931. His funeral was conducted from the First Church in Mayfield by the pastor W. H. Horton, assisted by W. M. Wood and R. L. Clark. His body was laid to rest in Maplewood cemetery. Our brother was united in marriage to Miss Loulie Tinsley, the daughter of Judge R. L. and Elizabeth Tinsley, of Eminence, Ky.; on January 4; 1878. Seven children were born to this union. His wife and seven children all survived him. They were privileged to observe their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1928. The ministry of Dr. A. S. Pettie was outstanding in the building up of all the churches he pastored and in advancing the cause of the denomination. His ministerial ability was readily recognized everywhere he went. He earnestly contended for the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
