MOTHERAL was born November 11, 1818, in Wilson County, Tenn., and was taken by his parents to Lawrence County, Ala., in 1819, and brought to Graves County, Ky., in 1831, where he still retains his residence. His father, John Motheral, was born in 1795, in North Carolina, was a member of Gen. Carroll's body guard in the war of 1812, and died in 1870. He was the son of Samuel Motheral, a native of Ireland. John married Cynthia, daughter of Rev. James Farr, of Wilson County, Tenn. She was born in 1794, and died in 1854. Their children were William C., subject, James F., Samuel A., Robert A., Donald C., Cynthia E., Sarah J. (Kennady) and Joseph K. On March 29, 1849, John P. Motheral was married to Miss Hetty, born June 10, 1829, and a daughter of William and Charlotte (Sims) McCuan, of Graves County, and from this union sprang Mary J. (Gates), William J., Cynthia C. (Howard), John R. (deceased), James H., Martha W. (Farmer), Josie H. (Lawrence) and Lucy E. Subject is a successful farmer, owning 320 acres of good land. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity; also of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and affiliates with the Democratic party.
