MATHEWS, Graves County, was born March 23, 1835, in Robertson County, Tenn. He is a son of Thomas B. and Fannie (Powell) Mathews. The father was born in the same county and State; he died in 1864, aged sixty-seven. The mother was born in North Carolina; she died in 1860, aged sixty years. Dr. Mathews was reared on his father's farm, and at the age of eighteen entered a store at Springfield as clerk, where he remained three years. In the fall of 1856, he opened a store at Turnersville, which he continued until 1859. He then returned to Springfield and with his brother carried on merchandising until the breaking out of the war. He then commenced the study of medicine; after reading two years he commenced medical lectures at the Nashville College, after which he came to Graves County, and has since been engaged in the practice of his profession. In the fall of 1877 he came to Mayfield, where he has since remained. He was married December 21, 1858, to Lou T. Morrow, of Montgomery County, Tenn.; she died December 5, 1859, leaving one daughter, Lou V., now the wife of E.T. Taylor of Mayfield. The doctor's second marriage took place November 21, 1861, to Nannie P. Bush of Graves County. She died May 30, 1878, leaving six children - two sons and four daughters. His third marriage was on December 2, 1878, to Alice R. Boaz, a native of Graves County.
