JENKINS, county surveyor, was born May 11, 1830, in Owen County, Ky., and is the fifth child of John G. and Eleanor (Branlan) Jenkins, the former a native of Maryland and the latter of Kentucky. The father died December 15, 1883, at the advanced age of ninety-two years. Subject was reared on a farm, and received such an education as the country schools of that time afforded, and at the age of twenty entered the academy at Stamping Ground, Ky., taking a ten months' course, at the end of which he engaged in teaching, which he followed at intervals for a number of years. While at school he gave especial attention to mathematical studies, and chose the profession of surveying as his life work. While still young he served as county surveyor of his native county, and later was elected surveyor, which office he filled until 1856, when he resigned and moved to Cass County, Mo., where he remained one year, and then came to Graves County, Ky., locating on his farm of 140 acres four miles south of Mayfield, where he still resides. In 1856 he was elected surveyor of Graves County, and served in that capacity two years, when he resigned the office. Later he acted as deputy surveyor under J.E. Robinson, and in 1882 was again elected, and is holding the office at the present time. Mr. Jenkins has been actively engaged in his profession for over twenty years, and is one of the most skillful engineers of western Kentucky. In December, 1852, he was married to Jennie, daughter of _____ [sic] Hunt, of Fayette County, Ky. Mrs. Jenkins died March 10, 1877, in the forty fifth year of her age. December 20, 1877, Mr. Jenkins married Mrs. Augusta Drennan, daughter of Frederick Zollicoffer, by whom he has one child, John. Mr. Jenkins is a member of the Baptist Church, with which he has been identified for a period of twenty years. Mrs. Jenkins belongs to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
