Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. THE WEBB FAMILY. There is not an older or better known family in Grant County than the Webb family. In the early days of the history of this part of Kentucky, William Webb, Sr., with his wife and family, migrated to Kentucky from Stokes county, N. C., and was a typical "tar heel." William was born in North Carolina in 1792, and his wife was born in Virginia in 1800. They were married and spent their early life in the "Tar heel" state, where several of their children were born. They were farmers, frugal, industrious and honest. In those days the spirit of migration was abroad everywhere in the country, and Mr. Webb and his wife, with their numerous sons and daughters, packed their goods, sold out their effects that were not movable and turned their steps toward the West, seeking a home on this side of the Blue Mountain. This was in 1845. William Webb came immediately to Grant county and in 1846 settled on what is now the site of village of Cordova. Here the family of children grew to manhood and womanhood. A home was built in the clearing, and in honest industry and frugality the boys and girls of the Webb family grew up, married and settled down in life. There were eight children in the family. All of them are yet living, except one boy, who died young. The five boys, in order of their age are: J. H. Webb, 74; William Webb, 72; George N. Webb, 70; Joe Webb, 68, and James P. Webb, the youngest, 66. The two living girls are Mrs. Bryan P. Clark, and Mrs. J. W. Johnson, of Winchester, Ky. William Webb, the senior, was a Democrat in politics, and brought all his boys up in the party faith. He and his wife were both members of the Baptist Church. William Webb, after having passed a quiet and easy life, died in 1864, and his good wife followed him to the grave the next year.
