Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. JAMES W. WEBB was born in the county of Grant, near Cordova, on the 25th day of October, 1869. His father is William F. Webb, of this city, and his mother was Elizabeth Dean (Redd) Webb, sister of the famous Methodist preacher, Alex. Redd. He was reared to the age of twelve on his father's farm near Cordova, and at that age his father moved to Williamstown, and has lived here and raised his family here ever since. His education was secured in the common schools at Cordova and Williamstown, and is quite good. Mr. Webb made his start in life as a business man clerking in the store of his uncle, J. H. Webb. He began working there as a clerk in 1877, and for eleven years was a trusted employee of his uncle at which time he bought a half interest in the store, and remained a full partner until February last, when he disposed of his interest to his uncle. His twenty-three years in the store as clerk, and as junior member of the firm, has extended his acquaintance to almost every part of the county, and his genial good nature has made him friends wherever he has become acquainted. His business life has been an entire success. From a small beginning he is today a man well fixed with the substantials of this world. He owns a beautiful residence on Cynthiana Street, and has recently purchase the Johnson House Hotel property, at the price of fifty-five hundred dollars. He is a Democrat in politics, and while by no means a politician, is yet one of the best workers in the rank and file to be found in or around Williamstown. His health failed him somewhat, caused by the confinement of store life, and he accepted a position under his brother, Sheriff G. S. Webb, as deputy, and rode as deputy a little more than two years. At the end of that time he concluded to enter the political arena, and announced himself a candidate for Sheriff, and in one of the most of the bitterly contested elections ever held in the county, was a close second in a field of good fellows, but uttered no whine or complaint over his defeat, but took it good naturedly. February 15, 1888, he was married to Miss Minnie Barbour, daughter of J. Q. Barbour, a most estimable lady. Five children have been born to them, three boys and two girls. Their names are Ed, Viola, Floyd, Halloween and Marguerite. They are all bright, beautiful children. Mr. Webb is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Williamstown Graded Free School, and has been a member for five years. He is Treasurer of the Board. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge of this city. Webb Redd Barbour = none http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/grant/webb.jw.txt
