SHERIFF (deceased) was born in Londonderry county, Ireland, December 11, 1817, being the fifth son of a family of eleven children. In 1837 he emigrated with his parents to the United States, locating in Cincinnati. In 1838 his father bought a farm in this county and the family located on it. The son came to Williamstown and accepted a position in the dry goods establishment of N. C. Tunis, which place he held two years, when he purchased a half interest in the business. The following year he secured control of the entire business, which he successfully conducted until 1866, when he sold out his mercantile business to J. H. Webb. He then bought a farm.
