Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. J. T. SECHREST is a son of Thomas R. and Catherine Sechrest, and was born in the county of Grant, near Crittenden, February 6, 1865. He was educated in the common schools of the county, and in St. Joseph, Mo., after which he studied law in Sedalia, Mo., graduating there in the spring of 1883. He began the practice of his profession at Wilsey, Kan., and remained there for something like a year, when he was called home by the serious illness of his mother, and never returned to his practice, but turned his talents to the buying of sheep and wool for John J. Sechrest, who was one of the largest buyers in northern Kentucky. After the firm of J. J. Sechrest quit business, Tom Sechrest became general agent for D. Davis & Son of Louisville, and for four years has represented them in this locality, buying lambs and wool in almost every part of Kentucky and Indiana, besides having numerous sub-agents in the field. As usual, he is this year engaged in his favorite calling, buying lambs and wool, and will perhaps be the largest buyer in the county. Since reaching manhood, Tom, as he is usually called, has materially assisted his father in keeping a family of twelve children. He is in the employ of Hogsett & Ratcliffe, Crittenden, as collector for outstanding accounts, and has proved himself very efficacious in this line of work. In religion he is a Baptist having been a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church for many years, and is in good standing in the church. In politics he is a Democrat, having never voted any other than the Democratic ticket, and he has taken a leading part in several hard fought campaigns, principally those of '96 and later years. In the campaign of '96 he made several speeches throughout Indiana for the ticket, and proved himself to be a "spellbinder" of considerable ability. While a bachelor, his friends have hope for him bettering his condition in the respect. He is probably as well and as favorably known as any young man in Grant County.
