Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. ALVIN LOWE first saw the light of day March 6, 1863. He was reared on a farm, and followed agricultural pursuits until he was 21 years old. About that time he was employed by George W. Howk to work in his big general store at Cynthiana as clerk, and remained with him as a trusted employe [sic] until the death of Mr. Howk, when he decided to go West and grow up with the country. He went to Nebraska and remained there two years, following the farm, and also spent a portion of his time in Missouri farming. By energy and industry he had managed to save enough money to buy a small business, and he returned to his native State and began business in the grocery line on a small scale. His business has gradually increased until the present time he carries as large and select a line of fine groceries as any grocer in Williamstown. He is a careful buyer, and rarely has anything left on hand that is unsalable. And this is one secret of his success. Mr. Lowe owns the property where he lives and does business thus, saving rent and enabling him to sell to the public at a price that his competitors find it hard to compete with. His store is recognized to the traveling men to be a sound financial institution, and they are always glad to have his patronage and are willing to give him credit in unlimited amounts, but this he declines to accept, but discounts all bills, thus making another saving. While he is not a rich man, in the sense of wealth, he at least has a competency, and his grocery trade brings him an income each year large enough for him to live comfortably on. He is an enthusiastic member of the Centurion Lodge of Odd Fellows, and an ardent member of the Christian Church, to which he became attached early in life. He is now in his thirty-seventh year and is regarded as one of the most successful business men, as well as one of the best citizens in his town. Alvin Lowe was married to Miss Lily Zinn February 17, 1886. To this union two children have been born, Ora V., aged 13, and James T., aged 11, both of whom are studens of the Williamstown Graded Free School, and whose names frequently appear on the roll of honor, and each of whom are exceedingly bright and handsome children. His marriage has been a happy one. His wife was the daughter of the late James Zinn, one of the county's best citizens, and she is herself a most excellent Christian lady and noble woman. Surrounded by all the comforts a life of duty and love entitles one to, they see their children growing to manhood and womanhood, two bright buds that will be a solace to their days of middle life and a prop in their old age. Besides his grocery, Mr. Lowe owns a farm and considerable other property near town. Lowe Howk Zinn = MO NE http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/grant/lowe.a.txt
