Down in the valley of the Ten Mile, where the ceaseless ripple of the waters falling over stones and waterfalls make music "for ever and a day" there lives a big-hearted generous farmer and merchant. His name is James J. Leary, and for miles around he is a familiar figure in the business and life of that community. James J. Leary is a son of Henry Leary and Miss Matilda (Cook) Leary and was born in the county of Bath on June 2, 1840, and in a few days will have turned his sixtieth year. There were nine children in the Leary family and his father migrated to Grant County before the young man, James, was five years of age. He first settled near Napoleon and a little later moved over to Ten Mile Creek, near the place where this subject of this sketch now resides. Here it was that he grew to manhood and developed that strength of body and mind that has since made him conspicuous among his fellow-men. He attended the common schools, which were then one of the best, and secured a fairly good education. In 1864 he enlisted in the Confederate army as a private; but the war coming to an end in a short time, did not serve long and was not in many battles of importance. He came back from the war poor, but strong and vigorous in mind and body he set to work to make his fortune. In November, 1865, on the 29th day of the month, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Craig, and to this union five boys [sic] and two girls were born, all of whom are now living, except Clara P., who died some years ago. The living children are John H. Leary, a merchant at Zion; Alice, who married James Turpie; William Perry, Dock, Charles E., Forrest and James R. Leary. The children are all fine boys and girls, and are the living images of their father and mother. Mr. Leary has been a very successful man, in business, in politics and farming. He has been magistrate from his district no less than eight years and made an excellent official. By dint of hard work and rigid economy he has accumulated quite a good deal of property, and is now the owner of nearly 400 acres of the best hill land to be found on the waters of Ten Mile Creek, besides much personal property and his store. In the store he and his son are partners, and carry a general line of merchandise, dry goods, boots, shoes, hats, caps, groceries, provisions and farming implements, and does a big business in his line. For years he and his wife have been members of the Free Will Baptist Church at Concord, in Gallatin County, and he is a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Leary is a model citizen and has the respect and confidence of all who happen to know him. Leary Cook Craig Turpie = Bath-KY Gallatin-KY http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygenweb/kybiog/grant/leary.jj.txt
