MAT LAWRENCE.  Uncle Mat Lawrence is eighty-nine years old, straight as
an arrow, six feet three inches tall, can read and write without glasses
and is as well preserved a citizen as can be found in Kentucky for his
age.  He lives on the Hardscrabble and Oak Ridge turnpike road five
miles from town and frequently rides horseback to town by himself.  He
is a Democrat in politics and very intense in his convictions and is
frequently a delegate to state and county conventions.  He owns a good
farm of 100 acres and has a nice home and is a typical Kentucky gentleman
of the old school.
