Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. JAMES R. LANCASTER was born in Scott county, near Mallory's Mill, October 18th, 1877, and is the eldest son of the late Robert Lancaster. In 1883 his parents moved to Grant county, and located on a farm. Their residence being destroyed by fire, they moved to Corinth, where the elder Lancaster engaged in the hotel and livery business and continued in that business until the death of Robert Lancaster recently, and the business is still conducted by Mrs. Lancaster and James R., her son. The subject of this sketch received most of his education at the Corinth Academy under various professors. After graduation at Corinth he entered the Lexington Business College, and graduated at the head of his class. For two years after his graduation he was head bookkeeper for Joe Horner in his general store at Corinth and then accepted a position with D. M. Hall in his general store at Heekin, where he remained one year. Returning to Corinth Mr. Lancaster again entered the employment of Mr. Horner and remained with him until 1899. He then went to Chicago and took a position as bookkeeper for the J. W. Sifton Manufacturing Co. In August 1900, Mr. Lancaster, on his annual vacation, took an extended trip into the heart of Colorado and the West, and was so pleased with the country that he decided to locate at Grand Junction and accepted a position as head bookkeeper for W. T. Dawney's large railroad store, where he remained until apprised of his father's death. After his father's death he returned to Corinth and took charge of his father's livery business, and assisted his mother in managing the Lancaster Hotel, which is one of the best on the Queen and Crescent Railroad. There are few young men as well qualified for business as James R. Lancaster. Sober, honest, industrious and efficient, he is sure to make his mark in the business world.
