GAUGH was born in Grant County, Ky., March 17, 1837, and is the second son of Francis and Mary (Evans) Gaugh, natives, respectively, of Grant and Scott Counties, Ky. Francis Gaugh was born March 8, 1805, and died October 13, 1857; his father was a native of Germany. John W. Gaugh was reared on the farm; he has two brothers: Gilbert K., in Grant County, and Francis M., in Woodford County, and three sisters. J. W. Gaugh owns 135 acres of land near Stewartsville, is a Mason; and politically he is a Republican. December 18, 1856, he married Miss Elizabeth M. Childers, daughter of Squire and Rebecca (Conyers) Childers, an old family of Grant County. Mrs. Gaugh died September 12, 1885, leaving three children: Lutheria, born May 11, 1864; Leslie, born June 17, 1868, and Clarence born August 26, 1875.
