Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. DR. ALVIN H. CLIFFORD was born in Harrison County, Ky., June 26, 1848, on the homestead of his grandfather, Esq. John Berry, where his mother was born and raised, now near the town of Berry. His father was Linzy Azby Clifford, better known as A. Clifford. His mother was Octavia Berry, sister of Col. G. W. Berry, who was killed at the battle of Cynthiana, Ky., in the late war, and for whom the town of Berry was named. The doctor's boyhood days were spent on the old homestead, except four years of his early life, in 1850. His father and family removed to Grant County, not far from Williamstown, near the place where Maythe and Crouch were hanged by a mob. There the father engaged in the merchandise business, and also kept a tavern. It was there the Doctor first attended school. The preceptor was Dr. W. H. Daugherty, who is now his brother-in-law. In 1854 his father and family again removed to the old homestead at Berry. After the Doctor had finished in the common schools he entered the Wesleyan University at Millersburg, Ky. He taught in Pendleton, Harrison and Grant Counties, after which he took a course in the Pulte College of Medicine and Homeopathy, Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery, graduating from the Cincinnati COllege of Medicine in 1888. The Doctor was a soldier at the age of sixteen. October 18, 1864, he enlisted in the 51st Indiana Volunteers. He was in the battle of Franklin, Tenn., November 30, 1864, and also the Overton Hill charge, December 16, 1864, and in several other smaller battles. Was mustered out of service at San Antonio, Tex., October 18, 1865. In September 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Bettie Mozee at Cherry Grove. This union was blessed with three children, George Mozee Clifford, now a student of Kentucky University at Lexington, and Phoebe Belle Clifford and Avinia Clifford, at home with their parents. Their ages were respectively, 17, 14, and 11.
